Long before conversations about women in sport became fashionable, Cheryl Ann Sankar was already proving that determination could outmatch stereotype.
Today, the former Olympian, national coach and founder of Sankar’s Taekwondo School continues to shape the next generation of martial artists in Trinidad and Tobago. Her dojo in Petit Valley has become more than a training ground; it is a space where discipline, resilience and confidence are forged.
But Sankar’s journey into martial arts did not begin the way most people might expect. “I actually started taekwondo late,” she recalls. “I was about 21 years old.”
